Golf in Trinidad
Golf in Trinidad and Tobago has been enjoyed for several decades. This relaxing sport can be seen as a way to get away from the world and relax as well as a way to get exercise.
The popularity of golf inspired the creation of the Trinidad and Tobago Golf Association which was established in the early 1960s. This association is the largest golf alliance in the country.
Upholding and preserving the golf interest is the main objective of the Trinidad and Tobago Golf Association. This association is following the procedures initiated by the Royal and Ancient of St. Andrews and the United States Golf Association.
The popularity of the sport triggered the creation of the Caribbean Golf Association. The Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships started in 1957.
In 1957 Trinidad and Tobago along with Jamaica were included in the championship. Since the first Championships were held the event has grown and is currently the leading golfing match in Caribbean Golf.
After 47 years of the Trinidad golf tournament the country has won 16 medals. The event has been hosted by Trinidad 9 times.
Several golf tournaments have been launched over the years, some by charities and others were launched by the Trinidad and Tobago Golf association.
The oldest event in the Trinidad and Tobago Open is the annual flagship. This event began in 1907 and has been played regularly since then.
In 1972, golf pros were included among the tournament players. Since then Trinidad golf players have played in professional matches as far away as Europe. Stephen Ames is one triumphant campaigner on prestigious golf tours who started in Trinidad and Tobago.
The Trinidad Golf organization has a junior committee looking after events of junior Golf. There are around 300 juniors in the Trinidad and Tobago Golf Association.
The association has been hosting as well as participation in the Caribbean Junior Golf Championships and have been very successful with the program.
The republic of Trinidad and Tobago hosts training sessions for local golf pros. British golf players have been hired to assist with coaching positions as well as holding golf clinics for golf players of all skill levels across the country.
